With panoramic views over the Samangua Valley and the Lewa Plains to the Ngare Ndare Forest and Mount Kenya beyond, The Lodge offers eight romantic and unique cottages, each with an open fireplace and private veranda.
The grandfather of the present owners of Borana fell in love with the wildness and soul-enriching isolation of this land. In building the lodge, the Dyers took care not to lose this while ensuring that the Lodge offers the ultimate in luxury and comfort. All cottages are entirely secluded and have private views from both bedroom and bathroom of the valley below. The Lodge is designed to work in harmony with the landscape and is created from local, sustainable building materials. It enjoys an idyllic setting, 17 miles north of the equator and 6,000 feet above sea level; the nights are cool and free from the malarial mosquito. All areas of the Lodge overlook a lake that is a popular watering hole for the local animals so there is constant activity for guests to watch. Take a guide and walk down to the dam to enjoy a close-up view of elephants swimming!

Room

There are eight cottages at Borana. Four have large double beds and four have twin beds - both of which are queen size. Four of the cottages have their own veranda. Two sets of cottages share a veranda, both of which has a phenomenal view over the dam. Each cottage also has an open-fireplace lit every evening by the room stewardess; a basket of firewood is kept in each room. The bathrooms are the epitome of luxury: spacious, clean and with exceptional views over wildest Africa.

Room One

Located furthest to the north of the main lodge. Room One is ideal for honeymooners. It features a private verandah and beautiful views to the north as well as down into the valley.

Room Two

Located between Room One and the dining room and has amazing views from the bathroom.

Room Three

Located very close to the main mess, near Room Four - together they make a good combination for a family. It features two large single beds, private verandah and space in the bedroom to relax as well, lovely big bathroom with bath and shower, and great views and it's wheelchair friendly.

Room Four

Located below the main lodge, near Room Three - would make a good combination. Private verandah is below the room. The bathroom is below the bedroom and it is moulded into the natural rock.

Room Five

Part of a double cottage - with Room Six (which also has its own children’s room). It shared verandah with Room Six. Views down into the dam. It has two large single beds. More amazing views from the bath and shower.

Room Six

Room Six has its own deck with a children’s room downstairs, below the deck - hence the ‘three quarters’. The children’s room is only suitable for small children (small beds!) but is very colourful. The rooms share a bathroom, upstairs adjacent to the parent’s bedrooms and it shares a verandah with Room Five - therefore ideal for a family of six.

Room Seven

Part of a double cottage with Room 8. Upstairs, twin bedroom with a clear view of all that happens on the waterhole. Stylish bathroom. Shared sitting/dining room with Room 8 making it perfect accommodation for guests travelling with friends or teenage children.

Room Eight

Part of a double cottage with room 7. Large double bed. The most spacious room at Borana, with a huge bathroom overlooking its own plunge pool. Shared sitting/dining room with Room 7 making it perfect accommodation for guests travelling with friends or teenage children. This cottage is quite far from the lodge down a steep set of stairs, which is well worth the trip to get there.

Dining

In the dining room at the main lodge guests can sample fresh produce from the Ranch, fresh juice from the Borana orchard and wines from around the world. In the sitting room, sofas and armchairs surround a huge open fireplace and picture windows guarantee a continuing vista to the plains below.

Recreation

Relax at the infinity pool or visit the ranch, go horseback riding, take a guided walk or go mountain biking. Guests can also visit the neighouring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and see tons of different animals. Also there's night game drives that allow guests into the nocturnal life of the bush that is denied them in most of the parks. Borana is a spectacular environment in which to bicycle. Both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters can be chartered to give guests a bird’s eye view of the landscape around Mount Kenya.
